CURRENT SCAMS

Fake Endorsements

Chris Packham has issued a warning on Twitter that he is being targeted by an impersonation scam.  He is worried because hundreds of people are sharing posts and adverts falsely claiming that he is endorsing cryptocurrency schemes.

Dragon’s Den profiles are being falsely used to promote ‘clinically proven’ diet pills.  Scam emails and adverts show Dragon’s Den celebrities endorsing products with links to an article on a spoofed Daily Mail website.  The fake article provides a link to purchase a bottle of pills – but the scammers simply steal your personal information.

Ticket Scams

Which? warn that ticket scams have doubled in the last year.  Fraudsters target young people (18-24 years olds were the most common victims) and tickets to Premier League season matches were the worst affected.  But tickets to any events being sold via social media are suspect, particularly when payment is requested via bank transfer or in bitcoin.  If you can’t pay by Paypal – always be suspicious.

Fraudulent emails

Fraudsters are getting very clever at including corporate branding in email communications – but they are still not very good at spelling and grammar.  Legitimate organisations rarely make mistakes because the emails are written by professionals and spelling and grammar are thoroughly checked – so read emails properly and check any suspect links on Google before clicking on them.

Report any scams to  www.actionfraud.police.uk

Despite inaccurate claims in the Daily Mail’s ‘This is Money, Action Fraud do pass on all reports to the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau (NFIB) for assessment – but they receive around 35,000 reports each month!

If you have been affected by a scam – help is out there – Victim Support has a free confidential helpline 0808 168 9111 and so does Mind 0300 123 3393.
